New York State is the star at film premiere

New York State is hosting a unique film premiere celebrating food and farming in the region.

The Golden Arrow Resort in Lake Placid is hosting the premier of the new film – Small Farm Rising – produced by Mountain Lake PBS and Adirondack Harvest.

The one hour documentary film will be shown on Saturday, October 1 and the premiere is open to the public and free of charge.
Small Farm Rising explores the sustainable practices, creative business models and deep community connections of three small farms in the Adirondack Mountains.

The documentary focuses on a new generation of farmers who are revitalizing rural communities, stimulating local economies and restoring depleted farmland. Each farm produces a wide variety of specialty crops, marketing them locally, and in the process, building a community that crosses age, class and social barriers. Featured Farms include: Essex Farm in Essex, Fledging Crow in Keeseville and Asgaard Farms located in Jay.

The documentary film was made possible through a grant awarded from the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets through New York’s Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. Videographer Ben Stechschulte filmed over 120 hours of footage to capture an entire growing season.
Jennifer Holderied, owner of the Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort said: “The film is wonderful and showcases the incredible diverse farm fresh offerings here in the Adirondacks and upstate New York.

For us at the Golden Arrow, being environmentally conscious is what we do naturally. Each of these farms featured in the documentary are farms that our chef and restaurant Generations has worked with closely for the past two years. Having guests be able to see and visit the farms helps people to have a greater understanding and respect of the land and what goes into growing and harvesting foods that we take for granted daily.”

Prior to the screening Executive Chef David Hunt of Generations Restaurant at The Golden Arrow Resort will create, prepare and serve an array of complementary hors d’oeuvres for the event utilizing products from the farms featured in the film.

In recognition of the film premiere the resort has created a special - Small Farm Rising Movie Premiere package for the weekend for $119 per person, per night (based on double occupancy). The package includes: two nights deluxe lodging, tickets to the premiere screening of Small Farm Rising and dinner at Generations Restaurant where Chef David Hunt has created a special five course price-fix menu in honor of the documentary using fresh food from around the State.

As part of the package, guests will be given a map showing each farms location directions and descriptions of each. Guests are welcome to visit and tour the farms, meet the farmers and experience.

Chef David Hunt, Executive Chef at Generations at the Golden Arrow said: “This is so exciting for all of us. Since we opened we have worked incredibly close with all of the local farms of which there are more than 75 regional farms. Our entire menu is centered on farm fresh and working to be as locally sustainable as possible. Not only does the food taste better when it is fresh, but it is also working to help the farmers and the local economy. I love working with the farms direct. I can taste the freshness and so can our guests. The film showcases the farms, farmers, incredible products and the Adirondacks”.

Since beginning their Green Initiative in 2005, The Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort has been a leader with creating environmental friendly green programs, amongst hotels and resorts in New York State and nationally. The Golden Arrow is the only property in the United States to have achieved a 5- Green Leaf Rating from Audubon International and the Audubon Greenleaf Eco Rating Program.

The Resort’s green programs and practices have set high standards for others in the lodging industry to follow. In 2010 the restaurant Generations received a national culinary sustainable award from Sante Magazine and finalist for Innovation Leadership in Sustainable Tourism from The International Ecotourism Society (TIES).

In 2008 they were awarded the Environmental Excellence Award from the New York State Department of Energy and Conservation and are the only hotel property to have ever won the award. The Golden Arrow in 2009 received the Good Earthkeeping Award from the New York State Hospitality and Tourism Association. In 2007 Jenn Holderied helped to initiate and form a Green Hospitality and Tourism Council for New York State, which launched in fall 2009
